The United States declared a national State of Emergency on March 13th and citizens have been asked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/15\/world\/coronavirus-world-response.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shelter-in-place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, restricting their outings to only the essentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these difficult times, many businesses are struggling to keep their doors open and all must find ways to keep their employees safe, comfortable and productive. <\/span><b>The days ahead will present some of the most significant HR challenges of our time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Identifying and implementing effective employee policies and support may make or break businesses in the coming months of uncertainty. There have arisen many HR challenges during covid, as this pandemic has turned normal business functioning upside down. HRM challenges during covid include organizing people to work remotely, supporting employees&#8217; mental health and wellbeing, motivating and engaging employees, to name a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, instead of laying off workers or slashing wages, <\/span><b>companies are seeking alternate corporate strategies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as using technology to support work-from-home or reviewing costs to stretch the budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies have also been asked to offer more generous and flexible benefits packages- and the government might be able to help out with that. It is important that those in leadership roles communicate clearly with managers and staff and demonstrate a clear commitment to employee health and business sustainability. Let employees of all levels know the current plan and possibilities for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand that employees are receiving conflicting forecasts and advice from the local, state, and national governments &#8211;not to mention social media disinformation. <\/span><b>Contextualize updates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) with specific instructions on how your company will be adapting recommendations and moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as politicians who lead during times of international conflict or emergency benefit from increased approval ratings, a phenomenon known as the \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rally effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d company leaders who can demonstrate resilience can improve employee engagement in a difficult time and up employee retention in the long term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- This site is converting visitors into subscribers and customers with OptinMonster - https:\/\/optinmonster.com --><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Be flexible<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest HR challenges during covid that companies are regularly facing is the <\/span><b>scope of the disruption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With schools and non-essential businesses closed or moving online, employees will need flexibility and understanding as they try to <\/span><b>re-establish a work-life balance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Companies can support employees who are quarantined or self-isolated by expanding paid time off policies or facilitating them in working remotely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 has already galvanized many large companies to improve employee benefit packages. Daren Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden and employs 170,000 workers, has said that it will henceforth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer paid sick leave<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a permanent basis. Walmart, Apple, and McDonald\u2019s also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revamped their leave policies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to the outbreak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Families First Coronavirus Response Act<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FFCRA) which passed on March 18, 2020, expanded previous laws to address COVID-19 absences. The bill provides (among other things) full-time employees of companies with fewer than 500 employees with up to 80 hours of paid sick leave and prorated sick leave to part-time employees. Employers can make sure time off policies follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/what-employers-need-to-know-about-hr-6201-families-first-coronavirus-response-act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national and local guidelines.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Create guidelines and support networks for those working from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michaelbernick\/2020\/03\/16\/remote-work-and-best-practices-the-coronavirus-workplace-series\/#6358871f769c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.3% of employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worked from home in 2018, remote work has quickly become the standard model during the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers moving to a work-from-home system can support employees by establishing norms and implementing a <\/span><b>defined remote work policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that sets clear expectations for when team members are to be available, how to communicate (via email, Slack, or another platform) and exactly what each team member is responsible for. Make sure employees have the tech they need to perform the tasks expected of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, give employees some breathing room to adjust to their new lifestyles. If their work doesn\u2019t need to be done during normal business hours, managers might do well to let employees create their own schedules and determine what works best for them and their families. These are difficult times and individuals may be struggling with unwell family members or general anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14584 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/24190652\/employee-mental-health.jpg\" alt=\"employee mental health\" width=\"796\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Keep workers safe by maintaining a healthy work environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For workers at essential businesses where <a href=\"https:\/\/preproduction.factorialhr.com\/blog\/work-from-home-optimize-home-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work-from-home<\/a> is not possible, it is up to the HR departments to<\/span><b> prioritize the health and safety of their workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Businesses should make sure their practices are in line with recommendations from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and consider nominating a workplace coordinator to manage office policy surrounding COVID-19. Keep employees safe and well by educating employees about transmission risks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offer training and development to establish hygiene regulations (washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish policies and practices for social distancing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prominently display posters illustrating respiratory etiquette (coughing, sneezing) and hand hygiene.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform routine environmental cleaning and disinfection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide no-touch receptacles and hand sanitizer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some key HR challenges that managers must consider is how they will cope if absenteeism spikes (if there is an outbreak in the office or if employees must care for family members) and create a clear plan of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Look for opportunities amid adversity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facing the HR challenges presented by COVID-19 is a tall task. But try to think of COVID-19 as an opportunity to show your company\u2019s empathy and demonstrate how it values its employees. <\/span><b>Crisis Management <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an integral part of an HR team\u2019s repertoire, and the ability to drive and support strong business decisions even during times of great turmoil will prove invaluable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14874 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/31111143\/challenges-of-hrm.jpg\" alt=\"challenges of hrm\" width=\"795\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><a name=\"q&amp;a\"><\/a>Q+A: HR Issues and Legislation During COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What is the Families First CoronaVirus Response Act (HR 6201)?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/6201\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relief package<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was signed into law on March 18th and offers protection to employees who need to take sick leave, preventatively self-quarantine, or take care of relatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>When does the HR 6201 go into effect?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It goes into effect on April 2nd. According to the US Department of Labor, companies will have to inform employees of their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rights to expanded sick leave<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before then.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Who does this affect?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the stipulations of <\/span><b>HR 6201 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply to employers with fewer than 500 and more than 25 employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What does the act stipulate?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more in-depth information about the law and how it affects you, make sure to check with a lawyer.
